Time flies!

What! Is it the Eid already?
It's sad to leave Ramadhan, especially when you feel you haven't done enough ibadah.
And it's hard to say good bye to Ramadhan when you don't know if you will live long enough to see the next Ramadhan.

On top of that, due to the busy weekends I haven't been getting the Eid preparations done. Now that I'm thinking about it, what is there to prepare? Not much, except that we the offsprings will be helping out at Mak's house tomorrow.

Alamak, Raya also means that I will discover whether my Raya scheduling strategy will make or break! AYIEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! I truly hope those late nights of strat prep work and months of presentations being shot down and revised all over again will pay off. God, please make it happen for me.

Anyway, last weekend some of us "Feel Good Rebels" visited Tengku Nurul who delivered a bouncing baby girl, Raniya, in July. Aiya, I didnt snap any pics on my phone. But I sempat took pictures of the Mahkamah Jalan Duta building, thanks to Santhana who was with me in my Swift. On our way to Nurul's condo, we passed by the Mahkamah and San spotted weird buntings on the columns of the building. So I made it a point to stop by and take pictures on our way out after visiting Nurul and Raniya. It's just too hilarious not to share! Here you go.

Now, what do you think the government is trying to say here? Is the message directed to the staff or the visitors? Go figure :-)

Okay gotta go now and leave the house for some long outstanding errands with Imran.

BTW. Please make some effort to visit the underprivileged this Raya and extend some help to them, okay. My sis told me in Iran, people rush over to the needy right after solat sunat 'Idul Fitri, to help ease their burden. Isnt it wonderful? Islam really encourages community-living and this is definitely the way to go. Thing is in Malaysia, most people have become too individualistic, self-centred and absorbed in consumerism - so much so that they forget about their social responsibility. And that is really, really sad, folks.

I truly hope that each of us will acknowledge this problem and make an effort to make a difference this time.

Selamat Hari Raya 'IdulFitri!
Have a safe celebration with your loved ones and be careful on the road.

..is the Joy of GIVING.
This Ramadhan, I hope you will join me in making a big difference and experience the joy of giving.I'm on a mission to raise donations amounting to RM3,300 to purchase 6 double decker beds (c/w mattresses and pillows) for 12 orphans to sleep comfortably at Rumah Penyayang Hembusan Kasturi located in Batu 3 Jalan Kapar Klang.
I must admit this is a tall order but I have faith that with your help, we can achieve this together. If you're interested to make a big difference, please call or text me at 019.228.3511 before 10 September. We can arrange for either me to collect your donation or for you to transfer your contribution into my MBB account (you need to sms me when the transfer is done and state the amount too because I have to ensure the correct amount when I tally up the donations)
Should you intend for your contribution to be your zakat, please specify the type of zakat (zakat pendapatan or simpanan etc) since I will make the specific akad with the orphanage administrator on your behalf.
Should your require a receipt for your contribution for your tax returns , I can arrange for that too. Just give me your full name and IC no (in addition to your donation ^_^). I'm visiting the orphanage this weekend and will update you on the progress of the donation drive. As of now (Fri 4 Sept 1am), the amount stands at RM1,140. So I have another RM2,160 to collect.
I hope I have your support for a worthy cause. To you who have donated and to you who intend to donate, may Almighty God reward your compassion and generosity with His Love and Blessings.
Have a peaceful and blessed Ramadhan.

Ramadhan Mubarak!

It sure has been that long since my last update. Can't help it lah, been super busy juggling work and home. Yes, many many events had happened.

For one, I'm over the King of Pop's demise ! Phew.

Allahyarham Yasmin Ahmad passed away on July 25. She will be missed so so much. Sigh. Kudos to Astro for the special channel "Yasmin Ahmad Dalam Kenangan" that ended transmission last week. The painful bit was they only had two films i.e. Sepet and Gubra, looped with well-made interstitials and The Making Of docus. If only they had Rabun. Her Petronas commercials brought tears to my eyes on many many occasions - the most memorable ones are Tan Hong Ming In Love (who could forget that child!), the Black & White one that had a child 'charging' his father for the housechores that he did and the commercial Kak Min did for a Singaporean Ministry titled Funeral. What lovely, lovely works of art!

Then in this month, Ustaz Asri Ibrahim of Rabbani passed away. What a loss! He and his golden voice will be missed. Alfatihah to Allahyarham Kak Min and Allahyarham Ustaz Asri Ibrahim.

I want to wish you Ramadhan Mubarak! I want to make Ramadhan a more meaningful month with more efforts to execute good deeds, more Quran reading, more solat, more dzikr, more patience, more sadaqah, more forgiving, more zuhud, more good intentions, eat less, whine less and so on. Yes I admit it is an uphill struggle to overcome the Self or Nafs. Self-reform is absolutely necessary and Ramadhan is the best time to kick-start it.

So there you go. Let's put in the extra effort and be better servants to Him.

Ramadhan Mubarak!

Remembering the King: Michael Jackson 1958-2009

MJ and Diana Ross 1973

Today, me and the rest of the world were shocked to learn the passing of the most successful pop entertainer - Michael Jackson. He passed on at 2.26pm Thu 25 June 2009 LA time, 5.26pm Fri 26 June 2009 Malaysian time. I learned about it when I was checking on Facebook when I woke up today Friday 5.45am, and saw a friend in Cairo (5 hours behind Malaysia) who updated her status with "Michael Jackson dies at 50?".

Sure, he's weird and eccentric, but no one can deny that he is the most recognized world entertainer with the best record in album sales, ever.
Anyone will agree that Michael Jackson was phenomenal, original, whimsical, magical, passionate, talented, poised, creative and charismatic.
He epitomised the X Factor and he truly lived the life of an enigmatic legend.

My sisters and I grew up listening to The Jacksons and MJ back in the 70's. We would put on the LP and danced like mad together! The Jacksons music was actually the first taste of Motown music we had so it's no surprise that other Motown artists like Smokey Robinson also left some impression. That also set our preference for soul and R&B music as we grew up.

As I entered adolescence, Off The Wall and Thriller made a big impact as MJ made his career statement, breaking away from his siblings to be a full-fledged entertainer in his own right. And he became a world-class entertainment overnight at the 1983 Grammys with Thriller - I still recall the pictures of him cradling his Grammys when I was in secondary school. And that year's Grammys was the biggest ever due to MJ's Thriller, The Police's Synchronicity, Roxette and Eurythmics. The 1983 Grammys compilation album was the hottest selling ever. That event changed the music landscape and pop culture worldwide, literally overnight.

As I entered the job market in the 90's I listened to Bad and learned a lot about brand endorsements since MJ was associated to Pepsi. I must say that was one of the most successful endorsements ever. Even now I have some mental picture of MJ-Pepsi campaign, and it pushed Pepsi's brand image up in the minds of the Generation X's. After Dangerous, I listened less of his music and heard mostly of his court cases, which was really really sad.

MJ revolutionised the music industry and made "short movies" a.k.a. music videos. I like to think that MTV might not have existed without MJ's music videos! I remember Thriller and Billie Jean videos debuted with a big bang and we were in front of the TV copying his dance moves. My sister Ita had the flair in doing the moonwalk. Hahaha..Oh those were the days! His videos were always highly anticipated, and people would be running to the TV when Bad and Black or White were newly launched on Malaysian TV. All MJ videos are big favourites, but my favouritest has got to be Remember The Time. I swooned to see MJ - he was especially strikingly handsome in that one - , love the Pharoah Palace set, love Eddie Murphy and Iman's cameo, the costumes, special effects and who would forget the choreography!

Since MJ was an influence in my growing, formative years, his passing is very much felt and I'm sure my sisters feel the same way. As a person, I felt that he was misunderstood by the media, not many would understand the mind of an eccentric, right? Not that I understand him, just that I felt that things are not what they seem to be and only he, his family and friends would know better.

The whole world mourns his departure and he will remain to be unique and irreplaceable. Rest in peace, Michael.
You will be remembered for your immense, diverse talents and uplifting music.

Beautifully Imperfect

“Funeral” is a new TV commerical launched by the Singaporean Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) which looks at relationships in a different light, through a woman at her husband's funeral. Ultimately, the TVC celebrates the beautiful imperfections that make a relationship perfect. This is fresh off MCYS latest Viewers Choice 2008 win for last years Family TVC which promotes the importance and value of family bonding.

My friend Gaya sent me this commercial today and I got the above info from YouTube.
I loved the commercial so much that I decided to post it here.
Jo Kukathas did a brilliant performance as the widow - great shots, great music, great script. Kudos to the producer and director!

Enjoy the commercial and tell me what you think..

IPOH revisited

Aerial view of the town of Ipoh shows the town padang, with the broad length of Brewster Road running up to it. In the bottom right hand corner, the Supreme Court. Next to it, the town council offices. Bottom left : Ipoh's town library. (taken from http://www.perak.info/)

Ipoh is a charming town, not because a few of my loved ones live there, but because it's got character. The old buildings stand tall and whisper volumes of history. The old converge with the new. I once had the opportunity to enjoy the night breeze at Padang MBI or affectionately known as "Ipoh Padang". Bad grammar, but MBI seems to like it. That was when I imagine I was back in its heydays when Ipoh was bustling tin mining town. My brother in law told me that Ipoh used to have the most number of millionaires in Malaysia! Okay back to my imagination : usually my vision would turn into black and white but that time my vision of old Ipoh was colourful albeit in sepia tone - you know that tint of "oldness" in the 70's colour photos? That's what I'm talking about. Sigh, I wished I could go back in time and see how Ipoh was like. Enough visualizing and let's get back to the present.

Another two reasons why I really like Ipoh are the cheaper, lovelier food and tyre alignment is just RM12! Yes, RM12 for all FOUR tyres!

Hahaha yes I shall tell you about this absolutely luverly makan place along Anderson Road @ Jalan Raja Muda called Ipoh Hainan Chicken Rice. I think you have not lived until you have tasted its Ambra juice or humbly known among the Malays as air kedondong. I've never eaten kedondong before, mainly because of its name - kedondong - which is less glamorous than apple, pear, dragonfruit and what-have-you. But my first visit to the restaurant in early May was indeed a revelation!
Ambra juice with sour plum a.k.a. Air Kedondong Asamboi

The ambra juice is fibrous, slightly "kelat" and spiked with asamboi. It was love at first sip! I ended up enjoying two glasses of this exotic drink. The food is lovely - very nice hainanese chicken rice with kerabu mangga and lemon chicken. My sister said I should have the Thai chicken for my next visit. And so I shall!
After that lovely meal I went to get my tyres changed especially because Goodyear tyres in Ipoh are RM30 cheaper each than Klang Valley's pricing. Wah! Bak kata Kamdar "Memang Berbaloi"! And yes alignment of all FOUR tyres for a mere RM12, done by a "see foo" to boot. This see foo apparently gets a cut of each alignment charge and he smiles his way to the bank at the beginning of each month, according to a reliable source. Mr See foo is also very quick with his work despite doing alignment MANUALLY (yup, no fancy schmancy computers like other tyre shops) - he did my car in just 10 minutes! And he does some 20-30 cars in a day. Cayalah!!!
The very camera shy SeeFoo

There are many other reasons why I like Ipoh but I shall let you discover Ipoh for yourself (like how Ang Lee did when he decided to shoot a Tony Leung film in Ipoh, think it's called "Lust, Caution").

VIVE IPOH!

Nizar is rightful MB: High Court -- The Star

Alhamdulillah, Allah is JUST!
I'm glad and happy for Perakians! ^_^

Published: Monday May 11, 2009 MYT 3:46:00 PM
Updated: Monday May 11, 2009 MYT 4:10:48 PM

Nizar is rightful MB: High Court
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here ruled rule on Monday that Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin is the rightful Perak Mentri Besar, and not Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
In an immediate response, Zambry said he would apply for a stay pending appeal. This was rejected by the court.
Nizar immediately left the courtroom immediately after a press conference to travel to Ipoh where he will seek an audience with the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, to get his consent to dissolve the Assembly and call for fresh state elections.
In his ruling Monday, Justice Abdul Aziz Abd Rahim said that a new
mentri besar could not be appointed as the office had not been vacated.
He said a mentri besar can only be dismissed by a vote of no confidence, and upheld the Stephen Kalong Ningkan ruling.
He noted that the Perak State Legislative did not hold a vote of no confidence.
In 1966, Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan was ousted when the state governor showed him a letter of no confidence issued by 21 out of 42 legislators and asked Ningkan to resign.
Ningkan refused, saying the letters were not tantamount to a vote of no confidence in the state legislative assembly. He was sacked by the governor but eventually reinstated by the Borneo High Court, which saw the necessity of a formal vote of no confidence.
According to the
Nutgraph, the judge ruled ruled that the governor can only dismiss the chief minister when both these conditions are satisfied:
(a) The chief minister has lost the confidence of the House, and
(b) The chief minister has refused to resign and failed to advise a dissolution.
Nizar had filed for a judicial review on Feb 13, seeking a declaration that he is the rightful mentri besar of Perak and an injunction to bar Dr Zambry from discharging his duties as the mentri besar.
On March 6, Justice Lau Bee Lan had ruled that there were constitutional issues involving the interpretation of Article 16 (6) of the Perak Constitution and later referred four consitutional questions to the Federal Court for determination.
However, on March 23, the Federal Court ruled that the case of who the rightful mentri besar is should be heard by the High Court.
Nizar’s lead counsel Sulaiman Abdullah, in wrapping up his submissions last week, said the Constitution was the “genius of the Malaysian people”, adding that the court had a duty to uphold it. Over the last few days, he had submitted that the Sultan, while granted powers in the Perak Constitution to appoint a mentri besar, could not dismiss him.
The only way Nizar could be dismissed, he said, was through a vote of no-confidence in the House.
He also said that a mentri besar could request for the State Assembly to be dissolved in the middle of a term without losing the confidence of the majority of the House.
Dr Zambry’s lawyer Datuk Cecil Abraham, however, argued that Nizar went by Article 16(6) of the Perak Constitution when he sought an audience with the Sultan – this article specifically provides for the mentri besar to request for a dissolution when he has lost the confidence of the majority in the House.
Under the article, Nizar is required to tender the resignation of his executive councillors when his request was rejected, he said.

The three by elections results : I like!

Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin waving to supporters at the Taiping Municipal Council hall after being announced as the winner in the Bukit Gantang parliamentary by-election. With him are his wife,Datin Seri Fatimah Taat and Pas deputy president Timbalan Presiden Pas Nasharuddin Mat Isa. (Picture credit : Malaysia Today mt.m2day.org)

As a follow up to yesterday's post, here's some info on the by election results

BUKIT GANTANG won by PAS - MAJORITY : 2,764

BUKIT SELAMBAU won by PKR - MAJORITY : 2,398

BATANG AI won by BN - MAJORITY : 1,854

I find Datuk Seri Nizar fascinating as a leader. Really.

Let's put aside our political difference here and just look at him as a person.

Not only is he a UK graduate engineer and have worked on big development projects in Malaysia, Europe, Australia and the Middle East, he speaks Mandarin and Tamil and he does his community work at the mosques and with numerous NGOs. He with his wife have raised 8 children with strong Islamic values. The first 4 kids have graduated as Syariah lawyer and Tahfiz. Doesn't that say a lot about a man? I think he is a Superman for being a well-rounded leader. Nak jadi pemimpin, mestilah jadi pemimpin / Imam dalam keluarga dulu kan. I see him as a role model for aspiring leaders.

NIZAR'S BUNCH. 8 kids!! And all raised with Islamic values. If I had an anak dara I would pinang one of his sons for my daughter. Hahaha. Aku tabik pada Nizar dan isteri. Serius!!! (Picture credit : prk059.pas.org.my)

My ex schoolmate, HALIDZA (she wants to remain anonymous but I told her I'm still mentioning her name here) had the privilege of reporting to Datuk Seri Nizar when he was serving at UDA. When I found out about it, I asked her on Facebook what it was like to be working with Datuk Seri Nizar. I can still remember her honest reply.

She said in response to my question - an excerpt from my FB status update comment by Halidza:

Yup. Engr Nizar ws head of ops for Dayabumi & Pusat Islam. Phew... Hw do u descr a good, pious, incredibly intellignt man in a few words...

What does that say to you? I rest my case! And thanks HALIDZA for sharing your thoughts.

I'm back at work!

Yay! I'm back at work and I drove to the office too! Alhamdulillah.

Yup, I went to see the ENT specialist for a follow-up appointment. He got the camera-gadget-thingy into my right ear and saw that the inflammation beyond my eardrum has greatly reduced. He gave additional medical leave to last till today Friday 3 April. But since I could drive (from 1 April) and also because I had gotten bored at home, I decided to go to work today.
Sure there are bouts of dizziness but I'm trying my best to fight them. I cannot give in to vertigo! Fight, fight, fight! ^_^

The Middle Wife

I got this story via email from an ex schoolmate, Adini a.k.a. Kak Long.
It's too adorable not to be shared. I'm sure you'll love it too!
The kid in the story has a bright future in story-telling :-)
Enjoy!

p.s. I want my own "play-center" too! (you'll know what I mean)

The 'Middle Wife' by an Anonymous 2nd grade teacher
I've been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own second grade classroom a few years back. When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell.

So I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually, show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it in to school and talk about it, they're welcome.

Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed under her sweater. She holds up a snapshot of an infant. 'This is Luke, my baby brother, and I'm going to tell you about his birthday.' 'First, Mom and Dad made him as a symbol of their love, and then Dad put a seed in my Mom's stomach, and Luke grew in there. He ate for nine months through an umbrella cord.' She's standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I'm trying not to laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me.

The kids are watching her in amazement. 'Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts saying and going, 'Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh!' Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. 'She walked around the house for, like an hour, 'Oh, oh, oh!' (Now this kid is doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.) 'My Dad called the middle wife. She delivers babies, but she doesn't have a sign on the car like the Domino's man. They got my Mom to lie down in bed like this.' (Then Erica lies down with her back against the wall.) 'And then, pop! My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the bed, like psshhheew!' (This kid has her legs spread with her little hands miming water flowing away. It was too much!) 'Then the middle wife starts saying 'push, push,' and 'breathe, breathe. They started counting, but never even got past ten.

Then, all of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom's play-center, (placenta) so there must be a lot of toys inside there.' Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her seat. I'm sure I applauded the loudest.

Shaken, stirred and turned inside out

Yup. That's how I would describe my world now.

On Saturday the week before (21 Mar), I felt too tired to wake up but forced myself up to start my weekly housechores anyway. By 1pm as I was ironing Imran's school uniform, it started. I felt the floor "racing up" at me while I bent down to iron Imran's shirt. I ignored it, thinking my imagination got the better of me and continued to finish ironing.

As I hung my ironed blouse a few minutes later it came again. This time I felt the wardrobe "crashing down" on me as I looked up to hang my blouse. It didn't stop this time. I then collapsed near my bed. As I picked myself up to lie on my bed, there was this powerful sensation of my whole bedroom "rotating" and I had to close my eyes, thinking it would go away. It didn't. Instead the sensation got even more powerful and it turned into some kind of motion sickness (never had it in my 38 years of life) followed by a strong nausea and an anxiety attack, complete with palpitation.

I just laid there and tried to make some sense of what was going on. Then I remembered reading somewhere about vertigo and decided that this horrifying experience must be it!
I think this is a pretty good visual representation of the vertigo experience..

I called my sister Ita to tell her that I couldn't cook spaghetti bolognaise for her little birthday do in the afternoon at Mak's house. Thankfully Ita was very understanding and told me to rest and that she will cook instead. I finally did throw up buckets later (it was a relief but rendered me a useless vegetable) and then decided to see the neighbourhood GP. The locum doctor absolutely did not "register" vertigo (maybe he "ponteng" when the subject "vertigo" was being taught in class during his uni days) and kept asking if I had eaten (3 times! Dowh.. I think he wanted to make the connection between dizzy spells and my possibly low blood sugar) and when my last menses was (told him I know I'm NOT pregnant). I just felt like hitting him. Can't remember how he looked like because the doctor's room was spinning too. All I remember is his blank expression when I mentioned vertigo. Duh.

Thanks to the wonderful Dr. Chem (our magical homeopathic physician), I got on 3 different remedies at once. They did help, the thing is the vertigo attack came again on Monday 23 March and again the next day and another round on Wednesday 25 March. A GP refered me to an ENT specialist and so I got Sham to drive me to Selangor Medical Centre. I was diagnosed with another glamourously named condition called Meniere's Disease. Basically the endolymph fluid in my cochlear (inner ear) had burst due to pressure. The endolymph thingy is the one that helps us maintain our balance. Vertigo is its symptom. I'm scheduled for a hearing test on Tuesday 31 March. That's because Miniere's Disease can also cause progressive hearing loss. That got me freaked out!

The thought of losing my hearing scares me.. but better deaf than blind I guess. Oh well, I shall cross that bridge when I come to it.

The most wonderful thing happened in the midst of these horrifying experiences. Allah's way of cheering me up. Last Monday, I discovered that Imran was hanging the laundry to dry all by himself while I rested in bed. Sham was out working at the time. When I hugged and thanked him, he responded with "I love you, Mama!". Wow.. that was truly, truly priceless and memorable and I shall remember that moment for the rest of my life. :-)

I'm also worried that my bosses might think that this is a lame excuse to be on medical leave. Sigh!!! It really takes one to experience the horror and agony of severe vertigo, nausea, palpitation - all rolled into one - to understand what a 'sufferer' (?) goes through.

Inner Ear 101 : A diagram of the middle and inner ear. The fluid inside the inner ear's semicircular canals is called endolymph. And when the endolymph bursts, that's when I lost my balance and hence suffer from vertigo.

Well, I shall fight this thing called vertigo. I will not give up my independence (Sham is chauffering me around as a result of vertigo) easily and I will return to work soon, God willing!

To end my post here's some layman-friendly info on vertigo and dizziness.. enjoy!
VERTIGO and DIZZINESS 101 http://www.balanceandmobility.com/patient_info/dizziness.aspx

DIZZINESS AND VERTIGO
Patient Information: Dizziness and Vertigo

Dizziness is a broad term used to explain how we feel when our sense of balance is not quite right. The term encompasses a variety of sensations that can mean different things to different people. If you have ever been dizzy, you may have found it difficult to describe exactly how it made you feel. Some people who report feeling dizzy say they feel as if everything is spinning around them, or as if they are spinning or turning themselves. This is what doctors usually mean when they refer to vertigo. Others describe feeling wobbly or unsteady as if they were on a boat. And still others may describe their dizziness as a feeling of "floating", lightheadedness or "giddiness".
Dizziness can be caused by a number of different factors, including a variety of problems within the balance control mechanism itself. How we control our balance is a complex process involving many different parts of the body. This process, as well as the physical problems that can develop, is described under
"How You Control Your Balance?"
Dizziness Disorders
Dizziness or vertigo can be caused by a disturbance in a particular part of the inner ear - the vestibular system. This is the part of your balance system that provides your brain with information about changes in head movement with respect to the pull of gravity. When your vestibular system is not working properly, the result may be dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, disorientation and possibly nausea and vomiting. Some specific disorders known to cause dizziness and/or vertigo are listed below in alphabetical order (I'm putting my disorders in red):

Acoustic neuroma is loosely defined as a tumor on the nerve from the inner ear to the brain. Patients with this disorder may experience a gradual hearing loss, ringing or buzzing in the ears and dizziness. A sensation of pressure and fullness may also be present.
Arteriosclerosis, a hardening or narrowing of blood vessels that supply blood to the brain, may cause decreased blood flow, resulting in dizziness.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a balance and dizziness disorder caused by a problem in the vestibular system of the inner ear which forms part of the balance organs. Small particles or crystals become detached from their normal location in the inner ear and interfere with the normal function of the vestibular system. As the name indicates, the vertigo, which can be intense, comes on suddenly following certain movements of the head. This type of vertigo comes and goes and, if left untreated, may be recur for years.
"Central" or neurological vertigo refers to dizziness that results from problems in the balance centers of the brain, rather than the ear. This type of dizziness is generally much less common than dizziness caused by inner ear problems. Strokes, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors or cysts and deformities of the upper spine or the back of the brain are all possible causes.
Hyperventilation can cause temporary dizziness and sometimes occurs when you are exercising strenuously or if you hold your breath when you are under stress.
Labyrinthitis is an inflammation, usually caused by a virus, of the labyrinth, the part of the inner ear that contains the organs of balance.
Meniere's disease is a condition in which repetitive attacks of vertigo are accompanied by pressure in the ears, buzzing or ringing, and partial hearing loss that can fluctuate during an episode.
Osteoarthritis, a joint disease, can affect the neck or cervical area of the spine. Openings in the neck vertebrae contain arteries, which supply the brain with blood. When these openings narrow as a result of osteoarthritis, blood flow to the brain is restricted, resulting in dizziness.
Ototoxicity is caused by exposure to, or ingestion of a particular substance which damages the auditory and inner ear system. Ototoxicity may result in irreversible damage to hair cells in the inner ear and/or vestibular system, which may cause vertigo, vision problems, hearing loss, gait unsteadiness and imbalance.
Peripheral fistula is a leakage of inner ear fluid to the middle ear. It can occur after a head injury or physical exertion or without a known cause (rarely).
Peripheral vestibular disorders refers to all forms of dizziness caused by inner ear problems, including BPPV, labyrinthitis and Meniere's disease. The term is commonly used when a doctor knows the problem is in the inner ear, but is unable to be more specific.
Post-traumatic vertigo is dizziness resulting from a head injury, concussion or whiplash.
Postural hypotension is indicated by symptoms of lightheadedness or blackouts, and is typically experienced when rising from a lying or sitting position.

Tinnitus
is buzzing or ringing in the ears and can occur with dizziness or may be a symptom by itself.
Vascular vertigo is dizziness caused by problems with the blood supply to the inner ear or the balance centers of the brain. This can occur in people who suffer from migraine or those who are overweight, smoke, have high blood pressure or don't get enough exercise.
Vestibular neuronitis is an infection of the vestibular nerve, generally viral.
Viral labyrinthitis is a viral inflammation of the inner ear. It causes dizziness/vertigo which may last days or weeks, usually following a cold or flu.

Common Myths About Dizziness
Dizziness is one of the leading patient complaints reported to doctors, second only to lower back pain. Historically, it has been very difficult to determine the cause of dizziness symptoms, but medical advances in the last twenty years have significantly improved the diagnosis and treatment of dizziness disorders. Because dizziness and/or vertigo can be so difficult to diagnose, however, a number of erroneous "causes" are often incorrectly assigned to symptoms of dizziness.

Myth: "Your dizziness is caused by anxiety; you just need to relax."
Fact: While someone with dizziness may be feeling anxious about their dizziness, which can magnify the unpleasant sensations, anxiety is not the underlying cause for the dizziness. If you are suffering from persistent symptoms of dizziness and/or vertigo that do not go away within a reasonable amount of time, it is a sign that there is something wrong and you should consult with a qualified clinician.

Myth: "Your dizziness is caused by your imagination and it's only in your head."
Fact: While you may find it difficult to describe your symptoms to your friends, family or doctor, your symptoms should not be discounted as imaginary. Your feelings of dizziness or unsteadiness are quite real and are a symptom of an underlying problem.

Myth: "Your dizziness is just part of getting older."
Fact: This is not true. Dizziness can be the result of a number of factors including injuries, degenerative diseases and other physical ailments, as explained under
"How You Control Your Balance." Elderly patients who suffer from dizziness, are not the same as their healthy, age-matched counter parts. In fact, symptoms of dizziness are not normal at any age and are a sign that there is something wrong.

Myth: "Your dizziness is simply a hormone imbalance."
Fact: Someone may have a hormone imbalance due to a variety of physical factors, which can cause nausea, fatigue, or "hot flashes", but a hormone imbalance per se does not usually result in symptoms of dizziness.

My Beautiful Imran

This is my all-time favourite shot of Imran. He was about 3 years old then. We were waiting for our turn to see the paediatrician at Damansara Specialist Hospital, he had fever at the time :-)

Holy Cow! It has been THAT long since my last post. Yes I've been real busy lately.

Lately too, I've been noticing that Imran has progressed substantially these few months and I'm simply ecstatic!
As you may know, Imran is autistic and he goes to public school with a special education department. He's turning 9this year. Of course it would be unfair for me to compare him to a normal kid his age. So you need to understand that he is learning at his own pace.

He hasn't been going to speech and occupational therapies for over a year now. Partly because Sham and I have gotten too busy. Partly also because it's frustrating to see different therapist each time we go for our appointments. Imran gets agitated and uncooperative when he sees a different therapist. It is difficult for him to adapt to change, you see.

So, we have been sending Imran for bio resonance therapy at this naturopathy clinic in PJ. The clinic is run by this amazing family who provides naturopathy healthcare. Yes they charge a substantially for their services but they give back to the underprivileged by giving FREE therapy to special kids. Fantastic!

Through bio resonance, Imran is detoxified and healed. Alopathic practitioners (your usual GPs) will not recognise the benefits of naturopathy and claim that the effects of bio resonance are unsubstantiated. Well, that's too bad because the therapies that Imran has undergone are showing results!! On top of that, the homeopathic remedies that Dr. Chem (a wonderful family friend) recommended have made a big difference as well.

Having a special child also means that you need to give him more attention. So, an abundance of attention (I think he is still lacking that, since I'm working. But I'm trying my best in managing my time) and prayers for Imran has tremendously helped him.

As I have said in my earlier posts, I do not have high expectations. All I want is for him to be happy, independent, self-sufficient and love Allah and His Beloved Ones. And I truly hope I will be around to see my beautiful Imran achieve all that.

Super Woman

No, I'm no Super woman at all.
But my beloved my family member who has Bell's Palsy definitely is!

Thanks to her positive attitude, mental strength and strong will, her facial features are almost back to normal. All that plus the fact that we have her on early treatment. She has no trouble following through with her meds, since she has been taking her supplements religiously. She doesnt wallow in self-pity, she's always on her feet, always doing something (housechores, Quran reading etc) and never keeping idle. She would look forward to go to the mall for grocery shopping and visiting ill family members. All these qualities make her a beautiful person inside out, really.

The lesson to learn is not to give in to your illness. Dont ever wallow in self-pity and depression. It's not the end of the world.

Just like Cornelius Robinson's motto in "Meet The Robinsons" movie..i.e. KEEP MOVING FORWARD!

She's my Super Woman and I love her!

Bell's Palsy 101

Hello folks. Today we will learn about Bell's Palsy. Have you heard about it?

Quote from Wikipedia

Bell's palsy is a paralysis of cranial nerve VII (the facial nerve) resulting in inability to control facial muscles on the affected side. Several conditions can cause a facial paralysis, e.g., brain tumor, stroke, and Lyme disease. However, if no specific cause can be identified, the condition is known as Bell's Palsy. Named after Scottish anatomist Charles Bell, who first described it, Bell's palsy is the most common acute mononeuropathy (disease involving only one nerve), and is the most common cause of acute facial nerve paralysis.
Bell's palsy is defined as an
idiopathic unilateral facial nerve paralysis, usually self-limiting. The trademark is rapid onset of partial or complete palsy, usually in a single day. Symptoms typically subside after 2-6 days and full facial function is usually returned within 2-3 weeks. Although rare, residual paralysis or dysfunction is possible and chances of this increase with age.
It is thought that an inflammatory condition leads to swelling of the facial nerve (
nervus facialis). The nerve travels through the skull in a narrow bone canal beneath the ear. Nerve swelling and compression in the narrow bone canal are thought to lead to nerve inhibition, damage or death. No readily identifiable cause for Bell's palsy has been found, but clinical and experimental evidence suggests herpes simplex type 1 infection may play a role.
Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory and anti-viral drugs. Early treatment is necessary for the drug therapy to have effect. The effect of treatment is still controversial. Most people recover spontaneously and achieve near-normal to normal functions. Many show signs of improvement as early as 10 days after the onset, even without treatment.
Often the eye in the affected side cannot be closed. The eye must be protected from drying up, or the
cornea may be permanently damaged resulting in impaired vision. Patients with Bell's Palsy always claimed by others to resemble Popeye.

I'm sharing this info with you because the most beautiful member of my family has just been diagnosed with Bell's palsy and it breaks my heart to see the changes in her facial features. But it's really heartening to learn that the condition IS NOT permanent and that it is curable. Alhamdulillah. I love her even more because she has courage and strong will and her high spirits will fight this thing called Bell's Palsy. She will pull through with flying colours.

The family has decided that she will not be treated with steroids (bad stuff!) and instead we have started her on homeopathic treatment and also good supplements to boost her immune system. Thanks to the luverly Dr. Chem, the homeopathy doctor who gave free consultation as always. Oh yes many thanks to Dr. Intan too!!!!

Did you know that Pierce Brosnan and George Clooney (one of the most sexiest men?) had Bell's Palsy too? Forget sexiest men, some babies are born with Bell's Palsy too.

It could happen to anyone. Even you and I.

Things like this make me realize how blessed and lucky we are!

Kung Hey! Kung Hey!

I wish all Chinese friends a very Happy Chinese New Year.

May the Year of The Ox bring you and your family Love, Peace, Health and Prosperity! Hope you guys will be safe wherever you are.

Me? I'll be enjoying the endless supply of honey lokam and heaps of groundnuts!!

That time of the year

Yes. Appraisal time!
And this time around we have a brand new system in place.
Some of us are grappling to understand the old system, let alone the new system.
Oh well, I'll go with the flow. Thankfully I have a colleague in my team and she's doing a fantastic job.
So as much as I hate this time of the year, I'll just take it in stride and wait to exhale!

Mi Casa is Su Casa

Yes folks we are selling our luverly home. I’ve decided to forego the services of an agent –thankfully- since internet advertising does a pretty good job. So the fee of 2.7% of the selling price can be saved for Imran’s education.

Mi Casa is strategically located in Seksyen 7 Shah Alam surrounded by UiTM, Unisel, mamak makan places, Guardian Pharmacy, a clinic, a dental clinic, sundry shops, Seksyen 7 secondary school and lots more. Barely 10 mins away from Jusco Bukit Raja, Bukit Raja NKVE exit, Federal Highway and Sek. 14 and 9 commercial centres. On top of that, Seksyen 7 will house Shah Alam General Hospital which is soon to be completed – just about 5 minutes drive (or less)!

The house is comfortably sized at 1824 sf, 22’ x 75’, nice kitchen size with 4 bedrooms….

HEY it’s MY blog so I get to do the sales pitch here! Hahaha just kidding.

I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m selling a perfectly located home.
Well, servicing the monthly repayments is getting quite challenging and moreover there’s just the three of us in the house..and the three of us sleep in just one room, leaving the other 3 room unused! The family area upstairs is also unused since the three of us are usually either fighting over the TV remote in the living hall or sleeping in the master bedroom.

So that got me thinking.

Rather than continuing to service the home loan and pay for unused space, we opted to let it go and go for a smaller and more manageable home like an apartment or a condo. So less time will be spent on cleaning! Woohoo!

I’ve advertised on 3 property sites and so far many enquiries come from those who checked my ad on Propnet.com. Good job, Propnet.com for delivering high cyber visibility for FREE! There’s one site (that will remain nameless) that charges RM100 per ad and promises high results and I almost placed my ad in it. I’m so thankful I didn’t! RM100 can buy me mucho macadamia nut ice cream lah!

I’m having an open day for prospective buyers who have called. The OPEN DAY is happening this Sunday January 18 3pm-5pm, so they are free to have a look-see at the house.

If you’d like to join, do come over! You could bring some macadamia nut ice cream to get a fantastic discount on the house too!

HELLO 2009! Ahlan wa sahlan 1420 Hijriah!

Wow time sure flies!
Before you know it, it's the new year which also means that you're older another year. YIKES!

Anyhow, I have been pretty busy during the hols entertaining Biyan with trips to Tangkak (and Gunung Ledang), Penang, Ipoh and Port Dickson. As long as he is happy, I am happy too :-)
I'll let the pictures tell you more.. I apologize for the picture quality, most of the pics are taken using my humble nokia (slow shutter) after all.

Biyan and li'l cousin Afiqah. We left for Tangkak to lepak at Abang Hafiz (my bil)'s mom's house. A very hospitable host, she is!

Biyan was really thrilled to be on the ferry to Penang. He's been bugging for this all year!Trees against the clear blue sky at Butterfly Farm in Penang. Shot by Sham.

We stayed at Paradise Sandy Beach Hotel, that serves v

December birthday babies: Mia, Atheelah, Ameer, Bena and Sham.Biyan just lurves birthday cakes, he makes sure he gets to blow the candles everytime, even if it's not his birthday!

I think all in all, 2008 was a pretty good year despite the tough times and rough patches that I went through. I'm not looking back and reflect this time.At my age I'm too old to get depressed to realize my mistakes and blunders. No regrets this time.

I just want to look forward and be positive about the future, be a better person, to give more and take less.. make more friends than enemies (got enemies meh?), make better decisions, save more money, be nicer to people.. important things like that. More importantly, I must CHOOSE to be happy and it doesnt take much to be happy, right? Oh yes, one more thing. Live life to the fullest and SEIZE THE MOMENT cos I dont know if I'll ever live long enough to experience the same moment..!

Here's to a fantastic 2009 and an enlightening 1430 Hijriah!

Eat, drink and be merry (and thankful!)

Who says good food is hard to find?
Not me.

All you need to have is a keen tastebud, a healthy appetite and a good guide. We went to Penang and Ipoh in early December and the thing I remember most now as I look back is the fantastic food.

I’m sure some of you have tried the nasi kandar at Nasi Kandar Line Clear. Isnt it amazing that a small stall nestled between shops along Penang Road has become famous nationwide for its Nasi Kandar? The first thing I saw when we arrived there was the long queue of customers waiting to tar pau the nasi kandar. Sorry I was so smitten by the food that I forgot to take pictures of the stall and its wonderful food. We had fried chicken, fish curry (a must!), telur ikan, vegetables and salted eggs. YUM!

In Ipoh, we had this fantastic Naan bread with superb condiments : mint chutney (I loved it), potato sambal (Sham loved it) and dhall + mung beans gravy. The combination is simply orgasmic!! I was restraining myself from licking the plate! Betul tak tipu!

You will find this wonderful food at Nasi Kandar AK at Jalan Maxwell only from 6pm onwards.

Again, I forgot to take pictures of the naan and its orgasmic condiments. Guess I’ll have to go back to Ipoh and have it for dinner again. But I’m sure I will still have a tough time remembering to snap pictures!

We went to Restoran Salim at Jalan Yang Kalsom Ipoh for breakfast and we had paper thosai (as big as a broadsheet size newspaper!), bawang thosai and luverly chapatti with sambal sardine.

Leed helped to "koyak" 'Ali's roti bawang

THE BIG KAHUNA. Mak's thosai paper. Its size put broadsheet newspapers to shame!

The places I went certainly didn’t cost a bomb. Fine, these places aren’t five star but really, if you’re a food lover you wouldn’t mind foregoing some luxury.
After all what really matters is the food and the company you are with, right?
